The
Design
Designed by R&P nearly 30 years ago, this gallery remains one of the most popular exhibitions at the Royal Ontario Museum. The gallery showcases ancient Egypt as a civilization, chronicles its dynasties and provides a place for the display of precious artifacts. Subtly located multimedia interactives and strategic lighting contextualize the content and provide an atmosphere that is monumental, light, bright, and soaring.
Occupying 7,000 square feet on one level, the design addresses three theme areas: history, daily life, and religion. The historical section is anchored on a strong central spine. The highlighted periods are designed as distinct areas and are separated by thresholds or portals. Centered in these areas are models of temples and pyramids which act as icons for those periods. The thresholds subtly represent parallel developments in architecture.
The public reaction has been flattering in the extreme, and excellent critical reviews have appeared.Dr. Nicholas Millet
